Gambling Addiction Management through Education(G.A.M.E.)

Gambling activities can cause difficulty for the individual and loved ones. In severe instances, it can cause disruption in many important life functions, whether psychological, physical, social or vocational. The gambler can experience a chronic inability to resist the impulse to gamble, leading to more problems.

G.A.M.E. is initiated to allow gamblers to learn about what is gambling addiction and its recovery processes through a series of psychoeducation and discussion group. Its function is to create awareness, motivates a process of cognitive change and behavioural change through: understanding gambling addiction; learning about money management; dealing with urges to gamble; relapse prevention strategies; coping with families; and other healthy recovery skills.

How You Can Benefit from Treatment

During your first appointment, you will be seen by a certified Addiction Counsellor for a comprehensive assessment. Treatment options will be explored with you to determine the best plan for your recovery. Your loved ones will be encouraged to participate in the treatment to learn how they can best help you.

In addition, we can provide basic debt management information, or refer you to credit counsellors if necessary.

You will also be screened for medical or psychiatric problems. Conditions such as depression if not treated can hinder your recovery progress.

All information given by you will be kept strictly confidential.

This is an overview of what you and your loved ones can expect from our treatment services:

  • Thorough assessment

  • Individual counselling with certified gambling counsellor
  • Group treatment
  • Family support group

Update

From 16 July 2009 onwards, all groups will be conducted at NAMS Specialist Outpatient Clinic C, Basement Block 9, Institute of Mental Health.
